2nd Gen MSI Wind Details: U91 and U120
Friday, September 19th, 2008
New details emerge about the second generation of Winds. Here are some loose specs that was pulled from the translated article. The translation was not good and the final specs are not confirmed, so please take the information with a grain of salt. There are no current images of either U91 or U120.
U120:
- 10″ LCD backlight
- 160GB HDD
- 2GB RAM
- One touchbar button stays the same instead of separating them into two “mouse” buttons.
- Touchpad was changed due to feedback, especially from Europe. Basically they’re saying that they solved the “problem” by switching to Sentilic touchpads. It is assumed that the U120 will use Sentilic touchpads.
- 3.5G enabled HSDPA
General:
- Name change from “Notebook” to “Netbook”. There will be a new “MSI” logo design.
- Expect Wind branded accessories (mice, pouches)
- SD card’s main purpose is to move data, which is why it sticks out. They are considering a model where the SD card is flush with the enclosure.
- AC adapter:
- 3-pin plug is chosen. 2-pin plugs may be considered if there is demand for it.
- AC adapter is now 40W, but would prefer 35W or lower.
- Battery:
- In Japan, 6-cell batteries are expected in October.
- A 6-cell Wind should weigh 1,250g or 2.76lb

- Total Power usage:
- 32~34W at maximum load
- 6W or less at idle
- VIA Nano CPU is considered, but probably not.
- Dual core Intel Atom CPU might be possible.
- Might have to use Vista

MSIWind.net forum members are reporting that only the first batch of Winds include the Synaptic touchpad while later batches include the less featured Sentelic touchpad. The Sentelic touchpad does not have finger sliding scroll features that are commonly found in many touchpads, instead scrolling is done by tapping the corners of the touchpad. Disabling the touch-to-click feature is also absent from the Sentelic touchpad settings and is causing frustration with users.
